The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced the inception of a new cash prize for individuals and organisation who come up with solutions to the 50 most serious environmental problems.
Five winners will receive the Earthshot prize in the next decade. Based on the principle that the world has ten years in which to make substantial progress to repair the Earth, the name reflects that of President Kennedy’s “Moonshot” challenge, when NASA aimed to land a man on the moon within the decade.
The announcement was made in a video narrated by Sir David Attenborough posted on social media.
More than 60 organisations and experts were consulted in the development of the prize, which will initially be run by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but could become an independent organisation.
